What is sleep apnea?

Nearly 20 million people in America are affected by sleep apnea — and most don’t realize they have it. Sleep apnea occurs when you briefly stop breathing while sleeping. There are many possible causes, including a collapsed airway or poor circulation.

Sleep apnea leads to a person waking up dozens or even hundreds of times every night, often with no memory of doing so.

Signs of sleep apnea

Frequently Asked Questions About Sleep Apnea

How can I tell if I have sleep apnea?

Two of the biggest warning signs of sleep apnea are:

  • Being told by a partner that you snore at night
  • Being overweight

In addition, daytime sleepiness, headaches, forgetfulness, and irritability are all warning signs that you might have sleep apnea.

What is a CPAP machine?

The Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine is a common sleep apnea treatment. It relies on a bulky and cumbersome machine that pumps air into your airway while you sleep, preventing episodes of sleep apnea. Unlike our custom oral appliances, a CPAP machine is noisy and frustrating to use. It can even make travel difficult as you must bring your machine with you.

Is sleep apnea dangerous?

It can be. In rare cases, apnea can be so severe and prolonged that death is possible. However even in minor cases of sleep apnea the lack of oxygen can be cumulative, leading to:

  • Memory loss
  • Low energy
  • Depression
